A Year in Review

Submitted by Lee on June 21, 2009 – 12:00 pmNo Comment

It’s no secret that I’m suffering from “waiting fatigue”.

Being in the UK & the house in France the amount of time we have to go out there right now is limited for a few reasons. The main reason is that I’m self employed so i either work & earn or take time off to renovate & earn nothing. It’s a situation that i was hoping to resolve by finding a balance between taking time off & finding local contractors & with a distinct lack of local reliable contractors things have been slow going (or so i thought).

Writing this post tonight about how my dad has finished plastering the main room i was flicking through photos looking for old examples when i actually got a shock on how much we’d achieved. It’s strange that sometimes you can be too close to something and photo’s are a great visual record and seeing them I wanted yo not only to share the successes with you but also to make myself realise that things ARE indeed moving forward.

Below is a prime example of how working on projects ARE making a difference. This was the 3 days that it took me to remove the 1st half of the old outbuilding.

Progress

Progress

In the year we’ve actually had the keys to the house here’s what we’ve achieved (underlined text is a link to the blog post) :

All plaster boarded.

All plaster boarded.

Non Physical
So while i sit here some days and indeed weeks and fuming that things aren’t moving from the French side of things i have to say this is a great amount of work that has been done. In reality though it’s only now with the plastering of the kitchen / lounge area are we starting to see progress. A lot of the work we’ve done is preventative or just to maintain the property in it’s current “state” so things didn’t get worse.
With the bathroom almost finished, the kitchen almost finished, the lounger almost finished and the chimney almost finished we are going to see some real progress very quickly over the next 2 months when we get one more week long visit out there.
Writing this post has been some free therapy for me I must admit. If you are renovating a property or have finished please drop a comment and let me know how you coped with the stress & strains of things not going at the pace you wanted.
