As many readers will know by know I’m struggling getting my head around the cost of solar power and it’s benefits and pay back mainly because for every plus there is a minus and it just seems like in some sort of research hamster wheel and I need to get off. So today on TreeHugger.com I spotted a little bit of welcome relief that actually floats my boat and has me mildly excited.

The Windspire is a new type of wind turbine from Mariah Power.

Firstly you’ll notice it’s a vertical turbine, requiring a lot less space in the rear garden, secondly the projected cost. Currently for the 1kW version you’re looking at around $6,000USD and for the 3kW unit you’re looking at around $10,000USD and this is tipped at producing enough energy to power your home.

The Mariah Power website is a little light on content and it does appear the style of the website falls over a lot but that could be down to the load it’s under after popping up on every green blog on the web. I’ll be keeping and eye on this as I must say I do like the idea of wind more than solar as it generates power 24hrs a day ( potentially ). Until there is more information out there here are a few bits to keep you going :

Company Name : Mariah Power
Web Address : http://www.mariahpower.com/
PDF Brochure : Link

I’m on the contact list for this so when more european wide information becomes available i’ll post it here. My only concern is that $10,000USD for the 3kW unit becomes €10,000 or even £10,000 and that puts it straight back into the problem bracket with solar.

Fingers crossed….
